THE BOOK THIEF

The story of a young girl (Liesel) who (at 13 and illiterate) is left by her fugitive mother with an adoptive couple in Germany during the Nazi era. As she pursues her thirst for knowledge, encouraged by her kind-hearted foster father and the young Jewish man that the couple hides in their basement, Liesel both demonstrates and experiences courage, tolerance, friendship and love in the midst of the horrors of the Nazi regime. Released in 2013, the film is based on the best-selling, award-winning novel of the same name, and stars Canadian actress Sophie Nelisse as Liesel, and Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson as her foster parents.
