Sadly, we in the Church know all too well the devastating toll of abuse on survivors, their families, and the extended community. Every Catholic diocese in New York has taken important steps to support survivors of child sexual abuse, including the implementation of...

Dear Friends: As the final months of the 2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal are upon us, I ask you to prayerfully consider making a gift to this year’s Appeal. While more than 30,000 of our parishioners in all parishes across the Diocese have generously responded to the call to be the Hands of Christ’s Mercy with their gift, there are still so many ministries that need our support as we pursue our vision for dramatic missionary growth. In Rejoice and Be Glad, Pope Francis states: “The Father’s plan is Christ and ourselves in Him. In the end, it is Christ who loves in us, for holiness is nothing o...

Updated Statement Regarding Bishop Barres and the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report The sexual abuse of any human being—and particularly the sexual abuse of children—is a terrible sin and a crime. It should not happen anywhere, and it most particularly should not happen in the Catholic Church. The fact that it did—and on such a significant scale—is disgraceful, and Bishop John O. Barres is committed to removing any remaining abusers and keeping out future ones. Although it does not excuse the crimes, sins and failures of the past, since 2002 the dioceses of Pennsylvania and elsewhere have put i...

He finds the proclamation of “peace on earth, good-will to men” impossible to reconcile with the hatred and carnage of the war. And as we look around our world today, we still find endless suffering, destruction and despair. Here on Long Island, poverty of all kinds...
