Christmas Oplatki

Posted on November 30, 2015

As we have done in the past, we will again make available Christmas Oplatki that we invite families to take home and share at the table of their Christmas Eve dinner. This is a tradition observed by many Polish, Slovak and Central European families. The custom can be traced back in Poland to the 10th century and continues to be observed in many homes today. Catechetical Sunday September 20, 2015 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Passing on the faith is a responsibility that is shared by every member of the Body of Christ. In the Acts of the Apostles St. Luke names catechesis, teaching the faith within the faith community and passing it on to form the next generation as one of the five marks of a vibrant Church that lives in Christ Jesus. While our concern for our brothers and sisters and especially our young people is a mark of our being a community of faith, our witness excludes no one and our love spills over into the wider community. As Catholics we embrace everyone ...

This year the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, August 15, falls on a Saturday. In light of that, it is not a Holy Day of Obligation – the faithful are not obliged to attend Mass. However, the Assumption is one of the most ancient celebrations in the life of the Church, dating back to the 5th c., and its importance should be recognized. Therefore, we will celebrate two Masses in observance of the Assumption – at 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. Parishioners are encouraged to honor the Blessed Virgin, assumed body and soul into heaven, at either one of those Masses. There will be no vigil Mass on Friday.

Will Christianity Survive in the Holy Land? This past February, parishioners who traveled as pilgrims to the Holy Land had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of an extraordinary man: Rimon Makhlouf. Rimon was our companion and guide to the shrines and holy sites: Nazareth, Bethlehem, Capernaum along the Sea of Galilee, ancient Jericho, and, of course, Jerusalem. He introduced us to more than places and churches. He opened for us the culture and faith of Palestinian Catholics, and their plight as very much a minority in that sacred land. Rimon has informed us that he is traveling in the United States, visiting family....
